AI Features Coming to Drupal Sites in 2026
The Drupal community is investing heavily in building a new suite of AI features that will soon be available for Drupal 11+ websites. The scope of this initiative is broad, and when completed will transform Drupal into a robust platform for building AI-powered content workflows and applications.
Here are the key features on the horizon.
Automators
Automators allow us to fill in any Drupal field with AI-generated content based on other fields. For example, we could build automators to generate a teaser summary for an article, create alt text for uploaded images, or automatically categorize and tag content. Automators can use external tools, allowing them to do things like scrape provided URLs, OCR uploaded PDFs, and generate images to use when the article is shared on social sites. Automators make authoring content significantly easier while still maintaining human review and editorial control.
An Agentic Workflow Builder
FlowDrop is the name of a new Drupal-native workflow builder, similar to tools like Zapier or n8n, that allows us to build multistep, branching workflows inside of Drupal. FlowDrop workflows can include AI-powered steps, allowing you to combine simple automations with more complex agentic behavior.
For example, we could build a workflow that automatically reviews and summarizes incoming contact form submissions, then routes them to the appropriate team member based on the content of the message. Or we could build a workflow that generates a draft press release when new products are added to the site, routing it to the marketing team for review and publication.
The possibilities here are endless and completely customizable to your specific site and needs.
Orchestration Integration
The Orchestration module integrates Drupal with external orchestration tools like ActivePieces, Zapier, and n8n. This allows your Drupal site to use any of the thousands of prebuilt connectors available on those platforms, opening up new workflows in which Drupal seamlessly works with your other tools like Google Sheets and Docs, Slack, or your CRM.
Chatbot Assistants
The new assistants module enables us to build customized AI-powered chatbots that are embedded on your Drupal site. Assistants can be used for content creation, customer support, or any other use case where you want to provide an interactive chat experience for your users. Built on top of the FlowDrop and Orchestration modules, assistants will be able to execute internal Drupal operations and integrate with external tools, giving them access to more relevant context and content than the external chatbots you might use when working on your site today.
Always Open Source
As with all Drupal features, these new AI capabilities are fully open source. We can mix and match different tools, AI providers, and models on a single site to maximize the capabilities and minimize cost. Using Drupal's AI tools means you won't be locked into specific vendors, and you can customize and extend features as needed to fit your individual use cases.
When Can We Start?
Many of these tools are available today, but I'm not recommending we start building with them just yet. The Drupal AI initiative is still in heavy development, and many of the modules are not yet stable or production-ready. However, I expect that within the next 3-6 months, these tools will be mature enough for us to start using them on client sites. In the meantime, if you have an idea for how AI could improve your site, let me know. Now's the time to start planning for implementation later this year.
